Back to school
September is traditionally a time when our thoughts return to things domestic and the reality of work, school and how and where we are living as a family really kicks in.

Once we have returned from a fun summer of activities, distractions and holidays, we start to look at our home in a different way. How are we situated in terms of commute and the school run? Have we grown out of the home we have loved? Do we need a dedicated home office as the reality of working from home becomes a permanent fixture, rather than a temporary fix?

Making the right choices

The location, size and liveability of our home all have an effect on quality of life and when one or all of these are compromised it is time to look at our options, and that makes September a big month on the housing market calendar. This is when we think hard about our circumstances.

Going Down

Now is a good time to start looking and to make some big life decisions. Some good news is that lenders have started to reduce mortgage rates, with Nationwide and Santander cutting rates last week. It looks like other lenders may follow. However this news must be balanced with the general decrease in house prices that have been recorded in recent weeks.

The Young Ones

It is not all bad news though, as lower house prices offset the higher interest rates first time buyers are facing. In a recent Compare The Market survey, Leicester rated highly in the top 20 of places for young people to live in the UK. At number 12, Leicester showed a relatively low cost of living, and most importantly a high happiness score.

It may never happen

It’s easy to opt out of big life decisions; decisions we know will make a difference. We have all seen the couple on TV who look at dozens of properties over years and who can’t decide to buy. Don’t be that couple, be proactive and practical, and remember help is out there if you need to run any ideas past an impartial outside observer, with years’ experience in the property market.

Sharpen that pencil, iron your new school shirt and make sure you have all the help you need to make the right decisions in the coming weeks by speaking with us at Phillips George. Be ready for a new school year and a new chapter in your family life.
